Pomeranian Spitz

The Pomeranian Spitz is a charming and captivating dog breed, known for its lively character and friendliness. These little dogs, which look like miniature foxes, are adored for their fluffy appearance and affectionate demeanor.

Physical characteristics

Pomeranians are known for their double coat: a long, straight topcoat and a short, cotton-wool-like undercoat, which gives them the appearance of a furball. This breed comes in a variety of colors, including black, brown, white, and orange . Adults measure between 18 and 30 cm depending on their size and type. The ideal weight for adult males varies between 1.8 and 2 kg, while for females it is between 2 and 2.5 kg.

Personality

Pomeranians are lively, energetic dogs and very loyal to their families. They love taking walks, even if short, as they cannot stand for long. They make excellent watchdogs due to their noisy nature. Despite their kindness and affection, it is important to be careful with young children as they are fragile and prone to leg fractures.

Origin

Pomeranians are likely descended from Arctic sled dogs and are related to breeds such as the Keeshond, Norwegian Elkhound, and Samoyed. The first reliable evidence of the breed dates back to the Pomerania region, bordering the Baltic, in 1800, when they were much larger. The selection of smaller subjects began in 1800, spreading to other European countries. In 1888, Queen Victoria fell in love with the breed, increasing their popularity. British breeders subsequently further reduced the size of Pomeranians and expanded the variety of coat colors.

Health

Like many small breeds, Pomeranians can suffer from luxating kneecaps. Other common problems include eye disease, dermatitis, and collapsed trachea. It is essential to monitor your Pomeranian's health with regular veterinary visits.

Exercise

Pomeranians don't require much physical activity and are happy with short walks or runs in the yard. However, they can walk moderate distances before becoming tired. Regular exercise is important to maintain their physical and mental well-being.

Nutrition

Pomeranians have a fast metabolism and require frequent small portions of food. Small dog foods are formulated with appropriate nutrients and adequate sizes to make chewing easier and improve digestion.

Grooming

While growing, extra care is needed when shedding your Pomeranian's coat. Once this period is over, grooming can be reduced to a couple of times a week. It is important to use a coarse comb to avoid damaging the undercoat. The coat must be well combed and lightly brushed. An occasional trim around the feet is also recommended.
