Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small spaniel with a short but defined muzzle, large, round, non-protruding dark eyes and a silky coat without curls. Available colors include Black and Tan, Ruby, Blenheim and Tricolore.
Adults measure 30-33 cm and weigh 5.5-8 kg.
Personality
It is an ideal dog for families, affectionate, sporty and undemanding , suitable for children and the elderly. It is not a watchdog but will announce the arrival of strangers, then welcoming them friendly.
Origin
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel developed from the toy spaniels depicted in the works of painters such as Titian and Gainsborough in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The short-snouted variety prevailed around 1800, with the bloodline maintained by the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim Castle. In 1926, Roswell Eldridge attempted to recover the original appearance by offering a prize for subjects similar to those historically portrayed.
Health
The most common hereditary problems are heart disease and syringomyelia. They may also suffer from ocular and orthopedic disorders such as patellar dysplasia.
Exercise
Adaptable to various types of exercise, they require at least an hour of physical activity a day to stay fit and avoid overweight.
Nutrition
Being small in size, they have a rapid metabolism that requires nutrient-rich food. Food for small dogs is specially formulated for their needs
Grooming
The coat must be cared for weekly , with monthly cutting of the nails and hair between the foot pads. Drop ears require special attention to prevent infection.
